When I worked at MySpace Canada, I had the opportunity to meet and work with this amazing lady. She was so driven and dedicated to MySpace, she added a much needed energy that our office was lacking at the time.

One of the things I took from Jamie during my time spent with her was her uncanny ability to brainstorm, strategize and execute tasks. Jamie has a can do, no nonsense attitude that anyone could learn from, so it was a HUGE surprise when I heard that MySpace had to let such an amazing person go, but I also wasn’t surprised when I read this press release about SoundCloud scooping her up.

Congrats Jamie on your new venture, I know you’ll kick ass,

SoundCloud Appoints Former MySpace Exec To Board
October 13, 2009 – Global | Digital and Mobile

SoundCloud, the Berlin-based online audio distribution platform, has appointed former MySpace SVP of strategy and global marketing Jamie Kantrowitz as board director.

Prior to her appointment, which begins with immediate effect, Kantrowitz worked for five years at MySpace and played an integral role in overseeing the company’s international expansion across 30 territories. In 2008, she took up the role as SVP of strategy and global marketing for MySpace Music, where she was responsible for managing high level entertainment relationships, content partnerships and original programming, as well as artist strategy, label relations, and consumer and product marketing initiatives.

“I’m super excited to be involved with SoundCloud and I think they have a very compelling business,” Kantrowitz tells Billboard.biz.

“SoundCloud is a great benefit for the industry to really help not just the output of music to consumers in the digital space, but really bring the entire industry into the [digital] space and into the cloud,” she went on to say. “I think SoundCloud is incredibly well positioned to do that and has already made great strides in Europe and I think it won’t be long before they will be a global brand.”

Alexander Ljung, CEO and co-founder of SoundCloud, said in a statement: “Jamie is a fantastic addition to our board of directors. Her insight into and experience of the music industry’s pains and needs will be vital for our future development, and will help us on our path towards becoming the leading online platform for music creators.”

SoundCloud was founded in 2008 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss as a digital platform where music professionals could easily upload large audio files, collaborate, promote and distribute music online.

“I think SoundCloud has started off on a great road and has been building an interesting product set that certainly is starting to grow in terms of audience,” Kantrowitz said. “They are very well positioned and have a very smart product road map into thinking about the music people who generate audio… respecting audio creators as a consumer rather than just a basic software play.”

Myspace Music Ignores Independent Music #musicmonday

** i used to work for myspace (canada), so i find this very disappointing when at one point they recognized the independent artist and focused on the aspect of having their user ‘stumble upon’ the unknown…looks like they kinda got caught up in trying to keep up their page impressions with twitter and facebook by using the only thing they have left…their music portal. read on.

Independent music has been a driving force during the development of MySpace, and now the social network has ignored its core when it launched the new MySpace Music. The new deal with Amazon.com makes them a new competitor against iTunes and Napster.

After signing a deal with the 4 major labels (Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, EMI Music, and Warner Music Group, Inc.) MySpace and its business partners could benefit from the indie artists, but will they return the benefits?

You can always say that yes, an indie artist being featured next to a signed artist could help their exposure. But does the artist gain the same amount of benefits as the major label?

1. The independent artist doesn’t see a fixed amount of money coming in from the on-site advertising deals that MySpace creates, because of MySpace Music.

2. The indie artist has to count on, whoever checks out their page, actually listens to their music, instead of it being forced into their ears by consistent radio airplay.

3. Ever since the News Corp. buy-out, the social network has been geared toward mainstream music. As of today, I only see 1 independent artist featured next to a whole page of mainstream artists.

Is that really helping independent music out?

MySpace is not an artist’s, or band’s website. News Corp. can one day say, “Let’s get rid of these pages.” The page is owned by them, not the artist who put so much work into maintaining the page.

This type of deal should really send a message to an indie band, or artist, which is, “I should have my own website.” The artist is free to post/sell their music, merchandise, and what ever they have to market themselves, and it can not be taken away.

Yes, MySpace is a free outlet, but there is a price to pay if you do not go by their standards. It is a great marketing tool, but that is it. All the friends, music, and layouts that an indie artist has worked to get can all be gone one day.

LOS ANGELES—June 16, 2008—MySpace, the world’s most popular social network, today announced the launch of a series of high profile user interface changes that include the site’s home page, navigation, profile editing, search, and MySpaceTV player. Today’s announcement—part of a year-long company initiative to redesign and rethink the core functionality of the site—will empower the site’s global community to more intuitively navigate throughout the site and better communicate with their family and friends around the world.

“A year ago we set out on a path to rethink the way people interact with the fundamental features of MySpace,” said Tom Anderson, President and co-founder of MySpace. “These changes lay the groundwork for what is to come—by the early fall we expect to reveal an entirely new and remixed MySpace that deepens the engagement of current users and attracts new ones.”

The changes will roll out throughout the week and features changes based on results from multiple in-home usability studies, online surveys, impromptu testing, focus groups, and user’s messages and comments sent to Tom’s profile. MySpace is working with Adaptive Path, a best of breed experience strategy and design firm based in San Francisco, to usher in some of the user interface changes.

Splash Page Re-launch: As the entry point for the site’s global users, the splash page is the gateway to the site and the primary log-in page for the community. On Wednesday, June 18 users in the United States will see a branded splash page takeover sponsored by a major advertiser and on Thursday, June 19 users will see the entire new look and feel which features a more intuitive and simplified log-in. The new splash page features a larger creative palette for advertisers, allowing for a flexible platform to put a large percentage of the page into a brand – an unparalleled opportunity for brands to engage users at the gateway to their MySpace experience.

New Navigation: Also on June 18, MySpace will unroll new site navigation sparked by user demand for easier access to key communication tools on the site such as mail and core viral community features such as music and MySpaceTV. The redesign provides a consistent and easy way to get from one place to any other place on MySpace and contains a drop-down menu housing additional functionality including Karaoke, Games, and Celebrity.

Profile Editor: The new profile editor will unveil a host of new personalization options for users making it easy for the community to customize profiles through a selection of styles and granularly detail their sections from a theme library offering color, borders, and images to choose from. Users with more advanced coding skills will still be able to fully customize profiles using HTML coding. The unveil of the profile editor comes on the heels of various profile enhancements including the recent launch of photo albums, photo editing, friend updates, status launch, page theming, and MySpace messaging with new search and sort.

New Search: On June 16 MySpace will roll out new searching capabilities with a consistent, clean user interface. MySpace is working with Lucene Open-Source engine and community to enhance search capabilities, marking the first time MySpace has contributed to the Open-Source community. Search will have improved filtering by location and added relevancy to search algorithms. Search results will be tabbed, with five tabs based on the top five search categories; People, MySpace site searches, Web searches, Music and MySpaceTV. With almost 20 billion searches on MySpace this year, MySpace is ranked third in total number of searches by any site.

MySpaceTV Player: Built internally, the MySpaceTV player has been redesigned for an incredibly rich user experience and will roll globally to the community on June 17. The new player includes scrubber, time-stamps, volume memory, and new menu systems which encourage the user to share and interact with content – and search within the player. The player fully utilizes Flash 9, with a true full-screen mode, and it supports HD. The new player offers a more flexible advertising platform with multiple formats (pre, post, ticker, companion banners) and advertising providers. The global launch will include international, language specific players (e.g. Japan) and will initially be released on all of MySpaceTV, with embedded videos to roll out iteratively.

The announcement of the global redesign initiative comes on the heels of the high volume of features that MySpace has ushered in over the course of last six month including the launch of the MySpace Developer Platform, Data Availability initiative, MySpace Messaging with Google Gears and new channels such as Games and Karaoke.

This morning MySpace ushered in the official launch of the Application Gallery (see link to CNET below) with lots of media interviews and an on-site keynote this morning at Web 2.0 Expo featuring our SVP of Product Strategy, Steve Pearman.

The coverage included positive stories across the tech and business press as well as the blogosphere (Mashable, TechCrunch, GigaOm, CNET, Paidcontent.org and ReadWriteWeb). The market reaction was positive with more than 23 original articles about the Gallery launch and various live blogs from Steve’s keynote—including feedback such as, “Steve was personable and very sincere and did justice to his 5 minutes. Looks like MySpace is serious about listening to users and managing spam…”

no more 70th floor executive view of lake Ontario but I’ll survive.
high ceilings, laminate wood floors, brick walls and wood columns is my home now.

ive only been at my new job for a couple days now and on my way home in the cab i realize how much i LOVE my job.

oh, you didnt know? i DO have a day job. dont get it twisted. lololz.
i just started an amazing opportunity at myspace canada as marketing coordinator.
it took me 3 years after college to find a job where i can be CREATIVE.
i dont understand why the entertainment industry (especially the urban industry) doesnt want to pay people to do REAL work. like full time, everyday, always on your computer, 24/7 work.
you really realize your value when you are offered a job and an AMAZING salary to do something you love.
it feels so rewarding to know that i will be receiveing a REAL paycheque to bring some of the most talented event promoters, artists and creative people together to add content to a site that reaches millions of people.
at work today, i met the most amazing executive from our l.a. offiice, sat in 4 back to back meetings with potential PR companies.

we didnt leave the office till 8:30p.
next thing i know, im hopping in a cab with my bosses to the spoke club for a rooftop patio dinner at a shared table with one of the judges for Canada’s Next Top Model.
i got a taste of the goodlife.

[i cant thank that nice guy enough for letting me wear his jacket on the rooftop].

did i mention i love my job?
