last night BET aired probably one of their BEST specials ever.
it’s first ‘well-produced’ original music documentary special, “My Mic sounds nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop”, provided hip hop lovers of all generations a chance to take a temporary stroll down memory lane and at the same time get a glance at the future in an in-depth look at female rappers in the hip-hop industry.

what i found most interesting was the way they visually showed who the key female rappers were in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. the rise of female emcees in the 90s opened a lot of doors for opportunities and put a lot of cities on the map. most women who came into the game had to be co-signed by a male or be backed by a camp.
its pretty hard to mention these female rappers without mentioning their counterparts:
Lady Of Rage – Death Row
Lil Kim – Notorious BIG
Foxy Brown – Jay-Z
Da Brat – Jermaine Dupri
EVE – Ruff Ryders
Trina – Trick Daddy

i think the best part of the doc was when it went a bit more in depth into the careers of Lil Kim & Foxy Brown Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot. that got a little nostalgic for me and a couple of other people on twitter. lolz

clap clap bravo to BET for doing such a really dope job on covering the rise and decline of female emcees in Hip Hop.

i came across this yesterday via my homegirl daniella’s tweet and immediately went to check it out. ive been hearing about this “alors on danse” for a while now, and i must admit, i didn’t pay any attention….oopsie.
apparently this has been the biggest song in europe [wasnt i JUST there?] for the past year and because i have been riding the kanye train since he joined twitter, this version + daniella’s tweet basically forcing me to click the link, [who can resist the phrase "LOVING IT" lol] it was only right that i check it out

Toronto’s soulful hip-hop duo, Art Of Fresh (Slakah The Beatchild & D.O.) is back with their sophomore album When The Night Comes In. The album is a great balance of soul & hip-hop with Slakah’s amazing production and D.O. giving witty rhymes. Like their first album, When The Night Comes In also delivers positive vibes and lyrics for your mind and soul such as the smooth track Scenario pt. 1 to the fast upbeat track Where I Go. Though they do carry the album themselves, Melanie Durrant lends a hand on the funk inspired track Good Shoes and Swedish artist Tingsek provides the vocals for the out of this world electric track When The Night Comes In. The duo always looks beyond the box when creating music and this is no exception. If you are looking for an album that offers a different sound to your ears then this is a real treat.

foreign exchange brings ‘authenticity’ with new album + tracklisting

“Authenticity” is the 3rd full-length from indie-soul duo The Foreign Exchange.

Picking up where their 2008 Grammy-nominated “Leave It All Behind” set left off, “Authenticity” is the group’s most diverse work to date, with a tight, 11-track song cycle spanning the duo’s trademark brand of lush electronic soul, to stripped down acoustic pieces that recall the heyday of 70′s singer-songwriter driven folk.

Lead single “Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me” is a playful, synth-driven hip-hop groove featuring a rapped verse from Phonte that evokes the band’s “Connected” era, while the epic opener “The Last Fall” finds Phonte singing some of his most cynical lyrics to date (“Love is at worst an excuse/at best it’s a truce…”) over a frenzied Nicolay production jammed with layers of strings, guitars, and dense choral harmonies.

“I think every band reaches that point when they come into their own and find a sound that is distinctively theirs,” says Phonte in reference to the album’s title. “The title refers to me and Nic’s journey to find our own unique space within this vast musical landscape. The biggest challenge as a musician is to find that ‘thing’ that makes you who you are. But I think we’re getting there, and we’re finding our way more and more with each record.”

Featuring guest appearances from longtime contributors YahZarah, Darien Brockington, Zo! and Median, and also relative newcomers Chantae Cann and Jesse Boykins III, “Authenticity” hits stores 10/12 on +FE Music.

okaaaaaaaay im REEEEEALLLY trying to gain my composure.
i blogged about bridget kelly a few months ago when she appeared along side hov to lend her amazing voice for the hook of “empire state of mind.”
i promised to blog about her if ive ever came across any new music from her but it seems like rocnation has her new material under some heavy manners [which i must sheepishly respect].
so to stumble on this video i was super excited to see that she teamed up with one of my fave producers ryan leslie to collaborate on what i might have to say is the song that could potentially bring r&b back…..
i have probably played this video about a million times whenever i got a chance this weekend.
video kind of has you sitting on the edge of your seat as ryan leslie does his production voodoo thing – repeating loops, bobbing his head intensely, adding melodies – until…bridget walks in. you think she would get into the booth to lay down some vocals, but the video is edited so amazingly that you have to watch to the end to even hope for a line in the chorus.
the way the next selection camp edits is viral videos is pretty effing genius [dear whoever, take notes].
