so i just got back from montreal [who knew pharmacists could party?]
and ive just been consumed by the devastation that has hit haiti recently.
horrified by the images on the internet and in newspapers, i couldnt even fathom the feeling of knowing that everything you have worked so hard for (for so little) gone in a matter of seconds.
before the earthquake, most Haitians lived on $2 or less per day. even though they lived everyday of their lives as normally as possible, the quality of live could never compare to even someone who lived in even the poorest of conditions here in canada.
i came back and immediately went to CNN.com and read real accounts of people who were fortunate enough to blog about their experiences after the earthquake.
i stumbled across this one particular blog about a woman by the mane of licia who runs a rescue center for young children suffering from malnutrition and kwashiorkor – a disease i just recently learned about.
even though she gives her own account of how the earthquake has affected her, the babies and the center, what really hit me are the previous posts of the babies who come to the center – skinny, deformed and listless children who are saved by licia and the nurses and then with a lot of love and therapeutic food called medika mamba miraculously ‘transformed’ – rosy cheeks, healthy skin and bright eyed.
the fact that children who live on a caribbean island with the ability to harvest the most natural fruits and vegetables can’t get the proteins and nutrients they need in their first five years of life is scary. to know that three children died on christmas day and two children died on new years eve at the rescue center was so intensely heartbreaking.
so after spending most of the night reading all the posts on her blog, i definitely knew i had to do something.
please visit licia’s blog and read for yourself the amazing and selfless things she has done to help the babies of haiti.
i woke up this morning with this song in my head:
